What is the Checkoff?

The national beef checkoff is an industry-funded generic marketing and research program designed to increase domestic and/or international demand for beef. This industry program is directed by the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, usually referred to as the Cattlemen's Beef Board or CBB. It consists of 104 members that are domestic beef producers and importers of beef and beef products. The CBB oversees the collection of $1.00 per head on all cattle sold in the U.S. and $1.00 equivalent on imported cattle, beef and beef products. The State Beef Councils (SBC) may retain up to 50 cents of the money collected in their state, but at least 50 cents must be sent to the CBB. The entire $1.00 is remitted to the CBB from assessments in Non-SBC states and from importers.

The CBB is responsible for directing national programs in promotion, research and new product development, as well as a variety of other marketing strategies. These programs are similar to businesses funded by shareholders (producers, processors, handlers, importers, etc.) with a board of directors that is accountable to the shareholders.
