The Beef Promotion and Research Act and Order requires the
collection of a mandatory $1-per-head beef checkoff assessment every time
cattle are sold. In Colorado, this
assessment is collected by the Colorado Beef Council Authority (CBC) – the Qualified
State Beef Council for the state.
According to Federal law, CBC retains up to 50 cents per head of
the mandatory assessment for in-state/local research and promotion programs and
forwards the remaining 50 cents to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) for national
beef checkoff programs.
In Colorado, producers are allowed to request a “redirect” of the assessments
retained for state programs to CBB for national programs.
All redirect requests must adhere to the following guidelines:
Form #OMB 0581-0294 “Producer Redirection of
Checkoff Assessment Form” must be completed, signed, and accompany each redirect
request
Form #OMB 581-0294 “Producer Redirection of
Checkoff Assessment Form” must be postmarked by the 15th of the
month following the month the cattle were sold, and mailed to the address below
Requests submitted after the 15th of
the month following the month in which the cattle were sold will not be
eligible for redirection
Proof of sale must be attached to each request
for redirection. Permissible documents
include a sale barn receipt for cattle sold, a processor receipt, and/or a
brand inspection certificate. The
receipt must show that the checkoff assessment was collected
